Devdutt Padikkal announced his arrival on the big stage in
emphatic style, converting his maiden Test century into a towering 167 against
Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. Walking in at No. 3 after
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early departure, the elegant left-hander displayed immense
composure and proactive footwork to anchor India’s first innings.

Padikkal's masterclass against spin was the hallmark of his effort. Facing high-quality slow bowlers on a traditional subcontinent track, he refused to let the opposition settle, frequently using his feet to hit over the top and tracking back to execute precise late shots. Alongside KL Rahul, Padikkal forged a decisive 151-run partnership for the second wicket, laying a firm foundation for India’s massive first-innings total.
After reaching his debut three-figure milestone on Day 1,
the left-hander showed relentless hunger on Day 2 despite rain interruptions.
Rather than relaxing after his hundred, Padikkal added another 67 runs, facing
230 balls in his innings and striking 15 fours and a six. His innings finally
ended when he was stumped off Prabath Jayasuriya.
Reflecting on his breakthrough knock, Padikkal noted that hard work in the domestic circuit prepared him to make full use of the opportunity. His century not only cements his place in India’s top order but also showcases the maturity of a young batter ready for the demands of international Test cricket.
