Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during an intensive net session in Colombo. To prevent any further aggravation ahead of the Test series, the team's medical staff advised resting the skipper on the first day as a precautionary measure. With the primary leader resting, Rahul, serving as vice-captain on the tour, stepped in to lead the playing eleven and handle tossing duties.
The warm-up match offers vital game time for the entire
squad to adjust to local pitch behavior and hot, humid conditions. Rahul’s
temporary role at the helm highlights his importance within India’s core
leadership group, allowing him to guide the team's tactics while Gill recovers.
The medical team is monitoring Gill’s progress closely, and management remains confident about his fitness for the opening Test match. Rahul’s experienced leadership ensures a smooth operational transition, keeping the team focused on refining their red-ball skills and tactical approach before the competitive series officially gets underway in Galle.
