Lanka. The decision comes as the 32-year-old failed to fully recover from a
persistent knee injury, with persistent swelling and discomfort forcing the
medical staff to take a cautious approach.

Bumrah sustained an impact injury during the ODI series against England, which subsequently forced him to miss the final match at Lord’s. Although initial reports from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru suggested he was making swift progress and might clear fitness tests in time, lingering discomfort in his left knee prompted the Sports Science team to advise against rushing him back into long-format action. Given the demanding, abrasive surfaces expected in Sri Lanka, the BCCI chose long-term injury management over short-term expediency.
The loss of their bowling spearhead severely complicates
India’s preparations under captain Shubman Gill. Currently sitting fifth in the
World Test Championship (WTC) standings, India face a crucial series starting
August 15 in Galle, where valuable points are at stake. Bumrah's absence
compounds a growing fitness crisis, with several key players—including Harshit
Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar—already sidelined or doubtful.
With Mohammed Siraj set to lead the pace attack alongside options like Prasidh Krishna, selectors are reportedly considering domestic standouts such as Auqib Nabi as potential replacements.
