However, former captain Joe Root and bowling all-rounder
Liam Dawson launched a gritty, vital rescue mission for the seventh wicket.
Showing immense composure under pressure, the duo counter-attacked with a mix
of patient strike rotation and well-timed boundaries.
The pair stitched together a crucial 121-run stand,
completely frustrating the Indian bowlers who had previously dominated the
middle overs. Dawson’s counter-attacking intent perfectly complemented Root’s
masterful anchoring act.
Root remained unbeaten on a brilliant 76* off 76 balls, while Dawson compiled a magnificent 68 off 83 deliveries to register his maiden ODI half-century. This gutsy partnership shifted the momentum entirely, steering England away from the brink of humiliation. Thanks to their resilient 121-run defiance, England managed to salvage a defendable total of 258, breathing life back into the match.
