In a monumental shift for franchise cricket, Chennai Super
Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways.
The official announcement ends an illustrious 18-year partnership, closing the
chapter on the longest and most successful coaching tenure in Indian Premier
League history.

Fleming’s deep-rooted journey with the franchise began in
the inaugural 2008 season, where he featured as a player before transitioning
into the head coach role in 2009. Alongside iconic captain MS Dhoni, the former
New Zealand skipper built a legendary team culture built on stability, calm
leadership, and deep loyalty to players.
Under Fleming’s tactical guidance, CSK established
themselves as a global powerhouse. His remarkable coaching resume includes five
IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), two Champions League T20 crowns,
12 playoff appearances, and a staggering 10 trips to the IPL finals. No other
coach has lifted the IPL trophy five times.
However, the decision follows a difficult stretch for the
franchise. CSK has found itself wanting in keeping pace with the rapid
evolution of T20 cricket, missing out on the IPL playoffs for three consecutive
seasons since their 2023 championship win. Furthermore, sister franchises under
the Super Kings umbrella—Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in
Major League Cricket—struggled to replicate that signature success.
Reflecting on his departure, Fleming expressed deep appreciation for his time in Chennai. "Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career," he stated. As CSK prepares for a massive tactical reset heading into the IPL 2027 cycle, they do so needing to replace the literal heartbeat of their management.
