Shan Masood’s tenure as Pakistan’s Test captain was
undeniably turbulent, defined largely by 12 losses in 16 matches and a slide to
the bottom of the World Test Championship standings. Yet, amidst the persistent
gloom of repetitive defeats, his leadership produced four distinct moments of
triumph that offered brief glimpses of tactical brilliance.

The absolute pinnacle of Masood’s captaincy came during
England’s tour of Pakistan. After dropping the opening match, Masood
orchestrated a dramatic tactical pivot that completely neutralized the
aggressive English batting approach.
By turning to an all-spin assault on a re-used pitch in
Multan, Pakistan secured an emphatic victory in the second Test, breaking a
brutal six-match losing streak. Pakistan doubled down on this strategy in
Rawalpindi for the third Test, spinning a web around the English batters to
seal a 2-1 series triumph, which stood as the only series win of his captaincy.
While his campaigns in Australia, South Africa, and against
Bangladesh were largely defined by series defeats, Masood's side managed two
other hard-fought individual Test match victories – vs West Indies in Multan in
Jan 2025 and vs South Africa in Lahore in Oct 2025. These wins were
characterized by intense rearguard actions where individual brilliance from his
bowling attack dragged Pakistan across the finish line from otherwise losing
positions.
Ultimately, these four victories stand as isolated exceptions in a bruising era. They proved that while Masood possessed the tactical imagination to defeat top-tier opposition, his side lacked the consistency to sustain those standards over a full World Test Championship cycle.
